Knee pain is becoming an increasingly common complaint. Although a condition such as osteoarthritis is not curable, the symptoms can be reduced and the progression of the problem can be helped by chiropractic care. As with all orthopaedic conditions involving the muscles and joints, it is important not to ignore them. The longer you leave a problem, the more difficult it will be to treat it.

Causes of Knee Pain

There are many causes of knee pain. Pronation of the foot may cause the internal rotation the knee joint and cause pain. Intensive exercises with proper stretches may also cause the pain in the knee joints. Weakening of the muscles around knee joints (such as quads and hamstrings) may lead to weakening of the knee joints and cause pain.

Treatment of Knee Pain

Treatment would involve reducing joint inflammation and reducing pain by avoiding aggravating factors, using a support, and using ice to reduce inflammation, muscle spasm and pain. Specific chiropractic manipulation and mobilisation techniques can then be used to areas of restricted movement in the knee and surrounding joints, to increase movement and improve function as well as reduce pain.

Prevention of Knee Pain

A rehabilitation exercise program will improve strength, endurance and stability. We also work on improving your balance and your sense of joint position (proprioception). This will help you to return to normal activities and also prevent new injuries. Custom-made orthotics help with prevention of the internal rotation of knee joints by supporting the proper arches of the foot.
